BEAUMONT, Texas Louis Dumont scored two goals and added an assist to lift the Mississippi Sea Wolves to a 4-1 win over the Texas Wildcatters at Ford Arena.
The Sea Wolves are now unbeaten in their last six games on the road in regulation, posting a 5-0-1 record over that span. The loss extends the Wildcatters losing streak to 10 games overall, going 0-9-1 since November 26.
It was a good win, Mississippi coach Bob Woods said. It was tough to travel all day long but our special teams were great tonight. Now we go back home for a pair of games on Tuesday and Friday and it would be good timing to go on a roll heading into the new calendar year.
Mississippi (12-11-3, 27 points) got rolling on a 5-on-3 power-play at 6:45 of the first period. Dumont one-timed a shot from the low left circle past Davis Parley to count his seventh goal of the season. The goal for Dumont also gave the veteran his 295th career ECHL tally, passing Darryl Noren for sixth all-time in league history. Assists went to Mike Jarmuth and Milt Mastad, who registered his 100th professional point with the helper.
Texas (5-15-6, 16 points) bounced back on a power-play of its own. Terry Marchant got behind the Mississippi defenders and roofed a breakaway shot over Matt Underhill for his fourth goal of the campaign. Helpers went to Andrew Ianiero and Tim Branham.
Special teams continued to be a factor in the second. Anthony Battaglia broke in on a breakaway on the penalty kill and was unable to cash, but Dumont followed and deposited a backhand shot for a shorthand goal at the 2:26 mark.
In the third, Mississippi went back to work on the power-play at 15:12 and put the game away. Jay Legault fed Dumont who passed the puck in front to Jeff Hutchins for his team-leading 14th goal of the year. Legaults assist extended his point streak to nine games.
Battaglia added a shorthand empty-net goal with 25 seconds remaining in regulation for his ninth marker of the season.
Mississippi converted on 2-of-7 power play chances, while Texas went 1-for-8. Sea Wolves had a season-high 52 shots outshotting the Wildcatters 52-39.
The Sea Wolves return home for their next game at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday against the Reading Royals, in the first-ever matchup between the teams, which will be held at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
