DULUTH, Ga. Gwinnetts Jim Jackson scored his second goal of the game 40 seconds into extra time to give the Gladiators a dramatic 5-4 come from behind overtime win over the Mississippi Sea Wolves before 6,003 fans at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
This loss hurts, Mississippi coach Bob Woods said. We had some costly turnovers and the Gladiators made us pay. Im not happy with our team right now and I expect to be on the telephone over the next few days. Some decisions will be made.
Mississippi (6-8-2, 14 points) came out all revved up in the first period. Captain Louis Dumont cashed in a power-play goal, which was his fourth of the campaign on shot from the slot beating T.J. Aceti at the 4:50 mark. Anthony Battaglia and Nicolas Corbeil had the helpers.
Battaglia made it 2-0 for the Sea Wolves on a breakaway marker at 7:39. Assists went to Travis Lisabeth and Pat OLeary.
Mississippi continued to pour it on in the first. Lisabeth pumped a hard wrist shot past Aceti to count his fourth goal of the season. Jeff Hutchins had the lone assist.
Just 33 seconds later, Gwinnett (8-3-4, 20 points) got rolling on the power play. Jackson netted his first of the year by whacking in the puck at the side, past Matt Underhill at 11:03. Kris Goodjohn and Chris Durno garnered the helpers.
In the second, the Gladiators closed the margin to one. Mike Vigilante, who had two goals and two assists on Friday at Louisiana, netted his ninth goal of the season at 10:39. Jeff Campbell and Lane Manson picked up the assists.
In the third, Gwinnett tied the score 3-3 on the power play. Ryan Van Buskirk was credited with his first of the season, with assists going to Jeff Campbell and Brad Schell.
Sea Wolves regained their lead at 8:24. Mike Jarmuth netted his third of the year with a low shot to the stick side of Aceti. OLeary and Lisabeth registered their second assists of the night.
In the final minute, Gladiators pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker. On a Mississippi turnover at the blueline, Gwinnetts Chris Durno took advantage by scoring on a slap shot from the left circle, with the assist going to Rick Emmett.
Then in overtime, Jackson deposited the game-winner after swooping in on the right wing. Sam Ftorek and Schell collected helpers.
Underhill suffered the loss despite making a Sea Wolves season-high 50 saves.
Mississippi went 1-for-5 on the power play, while Gwinnett converted on 2-of-4 opportunities. Gladiators outshot the Sea Wolves 55-25.
