Sea Wolves Slip Past Gladiators 4-3 In Shootout |
BILOXI, Miss. Louis Dumont, the ECHLs all-time leading point producer, scored the deciding goal in the shootout, lifting goaltender Randy Hevey to victory in his first-ever ECHL start as the Mississippi Sea Wolves edged the Gwinnett Gladiators 4-3 before 2,471 fans at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
I thought we played well, Mississippi coach Bob Woods said. We tried to punish them all night. Give the Gladiators credit they never quit. Hevey also deserved the victory playing solid between the pipes.
Gwinnett (2-0-3, 7 points) opened the score at the 1:43 mark. Mike Vigilante tallied his second of the season beating Hevey, who made a total of 22 saves. Peter Flache picked up an assist.
Mississippi (2-2-0, 4 points) knotted the score as Kerry Ellis-Toddington unleashed a right point shot that sailed past Adam Berkhoel for his third of the year. Louis Dumont and Jay Legault registered helpers.
The Sea Wolves took their first lead of the game on the power play at 17:32 of the first. Jeff Hutchins re-directed an Ellis-Toddington shot to make it 2-1 Mississippi through 20 minutes. Mike Martone also garnered an assist.
At 1:34 of the second, Travis Lisabeth gave Mississippi a 3-1 lead by notching his first of the campaign, assisted by Austin Miller, who collects his first point of the season.
Sea Wolves Milt Mastad was assessed a two-minute minor penalty for slashing at 8:35. Just six seconds later, Brett Engelhardt netted his third goal of the year, with helpers going to Jim Jackson and Brad Schell, who counts his first pro point.
In the third, the Gladiators Peter Flache tied it on a sweet feed from Vigilante at 5:25. Mike Strathopoulous also notched an assist, which was his fifth of the season.
The game remained tied into the shootout. Englehardt and Hutchins traded tallies.
Dumont, who was the fifth shooter for Mississippi, went high over the left glove of Berkhoel to end it in dramatic fashion.
Mississippi went 1-for-7 on the power play, while Gwinnett converted on 1-of-4 chances. Sea Wolves outshot the Gladiators 42-25.
The Sea Wolves host the Texas Wildcatters at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday. Its Kids Day, offering $5 tickets for all children 12 and under. The postgame features Trick or Treat with the Sea Wolves. The Booster Club is providing the candy, while Sav-A-Center Stores supply the bags.
