BILOXI, Miss. The Pensacola Ice Pilots scored three unanswered goals in the first period to lift past the Mississippi Sea Wolves 4-2 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
I dont think we played the full 60 minutes tonight, Mississippi coach Bob Woods said. Were giving up too many shots (42), giving away the puck too much and making a lot of work for ourselves. We need to regroup and play better next weekend.
Mississippi (1-1-0, 2 points) opened the scoring at the 6:20 mark. Rookie defenseman Mike Jarmuth scored his first pro goal by unleashing a slap shot from the left point, which hit the goalpost and trickled across the line beating Frederic Cloutier. Jeff Hutchins and Nicolas Corbeil picked up assists.
Pensacola (1-0-0, 2 points) knotted the score 41 seconds later on the power play. Chris St. Jacques, who was playing in his first pro game, beat Jason Wolfe with a shot at 7:01. Jordan Krestanovich and Jason Beckett drew assists.
The Ice Pilots took their first lead of the game at 9:37. Corey Neilson, who was selected the 2003-04 ECHL Defenseman of the Year, got a shot from the slot into the back of the net. Aaron Phillips and Krestanovich registered helpers.
Ice Pilots made it 3-1 at 11:43 of the opening stanza. Dwayne Hay chipped in the puck at the side. Assists went to Tyler Beechey and Neilson.
There was no scoring in the second, but the game became more physical. Sea Wolves Chris Cava fought Phillips to a draw, while Mississippis Lee Jacobson had the upper hand on Bill Kinkel.
In the third, the Sea Wolves closed the gap to one by converting on the power play. Kerry Ellis-Toddington scored his second goal in as many games at 4:46, assisted by Hutchins and Bobby Cunningham.
With the Sea Wolves Mike Martone in the penalty box for slashing, Ice Pilots Beechey scored a huge insurance goal with the man advantage at 14:18. Krestanovich, who was making his Pensacola debut, tallied his third assist of the game. Rookie Cam Keith also registered an assist, which was his first pro point.
Mississippi scored once on eight power play chances, while Pensacola went 2-for-6. Ice Pilots outshot the Sea Wolves 42-32.
