Sea Wolves Down IceGators 3-1 In Season Opener

BILOXI, Miss. Mississippi captain and the ECHLs all-time points leader Louis Dumont scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Sea Wolves to a 3-1 victory over the Louisiana IceGators before 5,603 fans at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.

It wont be our prettiest win of the year, Mississippi coach Bob Woods said. I thought we played solid defensively and (Jason) Wolfe played well in net. Well have a good challenge on our hands tomorrow against Pensacola. The Ice Pilots will be tough in Biloxi.

Mississippi (1-0-0, 2 points) got started at 4:47 of the first period. Kerry Ellis-Toddington unleashed a right point shot that got through traffic and past Kyle Kettles. Dumont picked up the lone helper for his 754th ECHL point.

Louisiana (0-1-0, 0 points) tied the score with the man advantage at 3:59 of the second. Mike Omicioli buried a loose puck at the side beating Jason Wolfe on Louisianas 18th shot of the game.

The Sea Wolves scored the eventual game-winner at 13:11. Anthony Battaglia fed a pass ahead for Dumont, who re-directed the puck in for his 290th ECHL goal and 756th point. Jay Legault also garnered an assist.

Just 55 seconds later, Mississippi added insurance. Nicolas Corbeil streaked down the right wing and snapped a shot into the back of the cage at 14:06 to make it 3-1 for Mississippi. Mike Martone and Jeff Hutchins collected assists.

Wolfe barred the door shut for the remainder, turning aside 39 shots for the win. Kettles made 23 stops to suffer the setback.

Mississippi failed to score on four power play opportunities, while Louisiana converted on 1of-4 chances. IceGators outshot the Sea Wolves 40-26.

Additional notes: Sea Wolves improve to 6-2-1 all-time in season openers and 7-1-1 all-time in home openers.

Mississippi gets back into action at 7:35 p.m. tomorrow, as the Sea Wolves entertain the Pensacola Ice Pilots at the Wolves Den. The game promotion consists of $2 hotdogs and $2 drafts from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
