BILOXI, Miss. Mississippi Sea Wolves general manager and coach Bob Woods announced today the team has signed free agent right wing Jay Legault (leh-GOH).
Legault, 25, appeared in 35 regular season games with the Florida Everblades of the ECHL last season, posting eight goals and 32 points. The 6-foot-4 and 220-pound Legault played in 16 postseason games as the Everblades went to the Kelly Cup Finals, before losing to the Idaho Steelheads in five games. A native of Peterborough, Ontario, Legault tallied two goals and five points in the Kelly Cup Playoffs highlighted by scoring two overtime game-winners. He netted the overtime marker vs. South Carolina in Game 2 of the Southern Division Finals and Legault notched the game-winner in extra time at Idaho in Game 4 of Kelly Cup Finals. Selected by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the third round, 72nd overall, of the 1997 National Hockey League Entry Draft, Legault enters his fifth season of professional hockey.
I heard Mississippi is a great place to play, said Legault. Im good friends with Mike Martone (Sea Wolves defenseman). He said that he really enjoys playing in Mississippi and so I wanted to join him. I thought the Sea Wolves had a good team last year and I hope to help make Mississippi a great team this season.
Jay is a highly skilled, power forward that likes to throw around his weight, said Woods. He has seen the pressure of a long playoff run, and scored clutch goals last season as a member of the Kelly Cup Finalist Florida Everblades. Were expecting Legault to put up some big numbers this year.
Legault becomes the 15th Sea Wolves player to sign for the 2004-05 season. Other forwards that have signed Mississippi contracts are Anthony Battaglia, Nicolas Corbeil, Bobby Cunningham, Lucas Drake, Louis Dumont, Jeff Hutchins, Travis Lisabeth and Tristan Lush. Signed defensemen consist of Mike Jarmuth, Jason Kean, Mike Martone, Milt Mastad and Austin Miller, along with goaltender Randy Hevey.
The Sea Wolves open their ninth ECHL season on October 22 at home against the Louisiana IceGators at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
