BILOXI, Miss. Mississippi Sea Wolves general manager and coach Bob Woods announced today the team has signed veteran free agent right wing Bobby Cunningham.
Cunningham, 29, started last season with the Texas Wildcatters of the ECHL, compiling 32 points (15g-17a) in 28 games. The 6-foot-3 and 230-pound Cunningham accumulated a 10-game point streak before being involved in a five-player trade on December 27 to the Greenville Grrrowl, where he tallied six goals and eight points in nine games. A native of Delson, Quebec, Cunningham netted two hat tricks last year, one each with both Texas and Greenville, coincidentally both against Greensboro. Cunningham enters his 10th season of professional hockey.
I am definitely glad to have the opportunity to join the Sea Wolves, said Cunningham. Ive been expected to be a goal scorer and point producer throughout my career and I intend to provide a scoring touch this season. Mississippi has won an ECHL Championship in the past (1999) and I would like to be part of the next Kelly Cup for the Sea Wolves.
Cunningham is a proven scorer and offense has been an area that weve been looking to fill, said Woods. Bobby is an impact player and I look for him to have a big season. Hes the type of player that will be counted on to lead and produce.
Cunningham becomes the third veteran to sign with Mississippi for 2004-05, joining center Louis Dumont and defenseman Milt Mastad. There are 12 total players that have inked Sea Wolves contracts, including forwards Anthony Battaglia, Nicolas Corbeil, Lucas Drake, Travis Lisabeth and Tristan Lush, defensemen Mike Jarmuth, Mike Martone and Austin Miller along with goaltender Randy Hevey.
The Sea Wolves take to the ice for their first game of the season at home on October 22 against the Louisiana IceGators at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
