BILOXI, Miss. Mississippi Sea Wolves general manager and coach Bob Woods announced today the signing of free agent center Nicolas Corbeil (KOR-bay).
Corbeil, 21, enters his second season of professional hockey. The 5-foot-11 and 185-pound Corbeil played with three teams last season. A native of Laval, Quebec, Corbeil appeared in 31 games with Florence (now Pee Dee) of the ECHL, tallying nine goals, 24 points and 18 penalty minutes. He played in one game with Norfolk of the American Hockey League and completed the 2003-04 campaign by returning to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Corbeil finished the season with Cape Breton, notching a total of 10 goals and 35 points in 27 games. He was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the third round, 88th overall in 2001.
It makes me happy to sign with Mississippi because I heard its a great place to play, said Corbeil. By playing 31 ECHL games last year, I know the league a little bit and it will really help me for this season.
We anticipate Nicolas will fill a scoring void for us, said Woods. He had a good first year of pro hockey last season and we expect he will improve even more this season.
Corbeil is the sixth Mississippi player to sign with the Sea Wolves for the 2004-05 season, joining forwards Louis Dumont, Anthony Battaglia and Lucas Drake along with defensemen Milt Mastad and Austin Miller.
The Sea Wolves drop the puck on their ninth ECHL season at home on October 22 against their rival Louisiana IceGators at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
