BILOXI, Miss. Mississippi Sea Wolves general manager and coach Bob Woods announced today that the team has signed veteran free agent defenseman Milt Mastad (MAH-stahd).
Mastad, 29, joins the Sea Wolves after playing the last season-and-a-half with the Louisiana IceGators. In 2003-04, the 6-foot-4 and 220-pound Mastad notched three goals, 12 points, a plus/minus of +18 and 84 penalty minutes, while appearing in all 72 regular season games. In nine postseason games, the McCord, Saskatchewan native had a +2 and 10 penalty minutes. Mastad was selected by the Boston Bruins in the sixth round, 155th overall, in the 1993 National Hockey League Entry Draft. He and his wife, Paulette, have two daughters, Devany and Peyton.
Im really excited to join Mississippi, said Mastad. It makes me feel great to have the Sea Wolves want me to join their team. For several years Mississippi has been my biggest rival, while playing in Louisiana (2002-04) and Jackson (2000-01). I am a defenseman that has pride in taking care of my own end of the ice and being matched up against the opponents top lines.
Milt is a big guy, who plays a physical, defensive style of game, said Woods. Hes a veteran leader that will bring a style that is well suited for the playoffs. Steffon Walby (Sea Wolves associate coach) hated to play against Mastad, which says a lot about Milts ability on the blueline.
Mastad becomes the first defenseman, second veteran and fourth player overall to sign with the Sea Wolves for the 2004-05 season, joining veteran center Louis Dumont, left wing Anthony Battaglia and left wing Lucas Drake.
Mississippi opens its ninth ECHL season at home on October 22 against the Louisiana IceGators at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
