Mississippi Faces Uphill Battle Against Columbia

BILOXI, Miss. � The Mississippi Sea Wolves trail the Columbia Inferno in the best-of-seven Southern Conference Finals, 3 games to 0.

 

In Game 1 last Wednesday, Columbia defeated Mississippi 5-2 at the Carolina Coliseum. The Inferno edged the Sea Wolves, 3-2 in overtime in Game 2 at Columbia on Friday. Then last night, Columbia downed Mississippi 4-3 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi.

Player of the Week:

Rookie forward Kent Davyduke registered points in each of the three losses against the Inferno. The 6-foot-1 and 205-pound native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan had an assist in Game 1. The 23-year-old scored the tying goal in Game 2 to send the contest to overtime. In Game 3, Davyduke also scored in the losing cause.

    
In eight postseason games, Davyduke has three goals and eight assists for 11 points.

 

Goaltender of the Week:

Greg Gardner made a total of 113 saves over the Sea Wolves three setbacks against Columbia last week. He set an East Coast Hockey League high for the 2003 Kelly Cup Playoffs by making 55 saves on 58 shots in Game 2.


The 6-foot and 190-pound native of Mississauga, Ontario is 6-3 in the postseason, with a 2.04 goals against average and .940 save percentage.

 

Streaking Sea Wolves:

*Defenseman Jim Baxter has a five-game point streak (2g-6a).

*Forward Kent Davyduke has points over his last four games (2g-3a), with two goals in the last two games.

*Forward Mike Scott has a two-game assist streak (3a).

*Dating back to the regular season, goaltender Sean Matile has won his last two starts.
