Generals Stymie Sea Wolves 3-1

BILOXI, Miss. Greensboro goaltender Jamie Hodson made 52 saves and held Mississippi to just 1-for-16 on the power play, as the Generals marched past the Sea Wolves 3-1.

Mississippi had its season-high home win streak halted at five games, but remains tied with Louisiana for first place in the Central Division with 64 points. The IceGators lost at the Cajundome against Pensacola 5-2.

It was probably the most frustrating game that Ive ever coached, said Sea Wolves coach Bob Woods. Nothing worked on our power play. Hodson played great in the Generals net. The only good thing is that we get back into action tomorrow at home against Louisiana.

Mississippi (29-13-6) had several great opportunities in the first period, but Hodson turned away 19 shots in the opening 20 minutes, as the Sea Wolves outshot the Generals 19-6, keeping the game scoreless.

In the second, the Sea Wolves finally solved Hodson on shot number 36. Sergei Kuznetsov let go with a power-play shot from the right circle over the left shoulder of Hodson at 12:32, for his 14th of the season. The goal for Kuznetsov also extended his point streak to eight games. Kerry Ellis-Toddington collected an assist along with Anthony Battaglia, who appeared in his 100th career pro game.

Just over two minutes later, Greensboro (27-19-1) capitalized with the man advantage. Eric Fortier converted on a centering feed from Joel Irwin, beating Greg Gardner. Fortiers 19th tally of the campaign was also assisted by Mark Turner.

Later in the stanza, Turner skated in on a breakaway while shorthanded, but Gardner came up with a big save to keep the game tied.

Mississippi had a golden chance to take the lead in the second, Hodson went after a loose puck in the slot and got caught wandering. But both Kuznetsov and Battaglia were unable to convert into the empty net.

In the third, Generals Likit Andersson, who was making his debut with Greensboro, unleashed a point shot through traffic and found the back of the net for the eventual game-winner at 16:59. Irwin and Fortier were awarded helpers for their second points of the game.

Sea Wolves pulled Gardner in the late going, but the Generals Matt Chandler lofted a 60-foot backhand into the empty cage to seal the deal with 57 remaining in regulation. Kurt Drummond and Andersson collected assists.

Mississippi went 1-for-16 on the power play, while Greensboro converted on 1-of-9 chances. Sea Wolves outshot the Generals, 53-22.

Additional Note: Sea Wolves captain Steffon Walby did not register a point, ending his 13-game point streak at home (9g-17a).
