IceGators Halt Sea Wolves 3-2 In Shootout |
BILOXI, Miss. Louisianas Armands Berzins ended Mississippis five-game win streak, by scoring the eventual game-winner in the seventh round of the shootout, giving the IceGators a 3-2 shootout victory over the Sea Wolves.
Louisiana takes over sole possession of second place in the Central Division with 32 points, one more than Mississippi, with four games in hand.
It was a typical old-time battle, said Sea Wolves coach Bob Woods. It was unfortunate that we just came up short in the end. Anything can happen in the shootout. Our guys could have packed it in, but at least we got one point and well have another chance at the Gators tomorrow at the Cajundome.
Louisiana (15-5-2) opened the score on a 4-on-4 situation. IceGators Ed McGrane feathered a pass across to Bobby Brown on a 2-on-1 break, beating Sean Matile at 17:27. The goal for Brown was his team-leading 12th of the season.
Mississippi (13-8-5) found the back of the net at 12:52 of the second on the power play. Roger Maxwell was parked in front and re-directed a Sergei Kuznetsov shot for his fifth goal of the season, past Derek Gustafson.
Matile made a terrific save late in the middle stanza. Konstantin Kalmikov busted in on a breakaway, but Matile flashed his left pad to deny the Louisiana shooter.
Louisiana went ahead in the third, as Konstantin Kalmikov tipped a Jamie Johnson centering pass, notching his ninth of the campaign.
Sea Wolves pulled Matile in favor of the extra attacker in the final minute. With 21 seconds remaining in regulation, Mississippis Steffon Walby tucked the puck in at the side, for his 14th of the year, to send the game to extra time.
In the shootout, Walby scored for the Sea Wolves, while Kalmikov tallied for the IceGators.
Then in the seventh round of the shootout, Louisianas Armands Berzins netted a huge marker. On the following shot, Sea Wolves Steve ORourke was stopped by Gustafson to end the game.
Mississippi converted 1-of-9 opportunities with the power play, while Louisiana failed to score on seven chances. IceGators outshot the Sea Wolves, 38-30.
