Sea Wolves Rally Past Ice Pilots In Shootout 5-4

BILOXI, Miss. Pensacolas Brian Eklund became the seventh goaltender in ECHL history to be credited with scoring a goal, but it wouldnt be enough as the Mississippi Sea Wolves staged a third period comeback to upend the Ice Pilots in the shootout, 5-4, in front of 2,743 fans at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.

The win snapped Mississippis three-game losing streak and gave the Sea Wolves their first win against Pensacola this year in five games (1-3-1) and Mississippi picked up its first extra time victory (1-4) this season.

Im disappointed that we gave them one point tonight, said Sea Wolves coach Bob Woods. We could have packed it in the way things were going, but we showed a lot of character.

Pensacola (10-7-2) opened the score at the 5:02 mark. Tyler Kindle sent a centering feed off the stick of Sea Wolves goaltender Sean Matile, who was making his first start since October 29, and into the back of the net. The goal for Kindle was his fourth of the year.

Just 33 seconds later, the Ice Pilots made it 2-0, by scoring a very bizarre goal. With a delayed penalty going against Pensacola, the Sea Wolves were controlling the puck in the Ice Pilots end. Sea Wolves Matile headed to the bench for the extra attacker. In the meantime, an errant Mississippi pass slid all the way down the ice and into the empty Sea Wolves net. Ice Pilots goaltender Brian Eklund was the last Pensacola player to touch the puck and was credited with the goal.

Mississippi (9-8-4) edged to within one on the power play. Jim Baxter unleashed a point shot, re-directed by Brent Gauvreau past Eklund. It was Gauvreaus eighth tally of the season.

Sea Wolves tied the game in the second period. Steffon Walby, back after missing seven games from the injured reserve, converted on a Gauvreau centering pass to net his ninth of the campaign. Walby also extended his point streak to six games (5g-13a).

Pensacola grabbed back the lead with the man advantage. Corey Neilson on the attack, dropped the puck for Greg Chambers. He moved into the slot and Chambers beat Matile to the stick side, to notch his fifth goal of the year.

In the third, the Ice Pilots went up 4-2 after Tyler Beechey let go with a shot from the left circle, tallying his sixth marker of the year.

Mississippi started its comeback at 14:41 of the third. Walby counted his second of the night and 10th of the year, re-directing a Baxter shot from the blueline.

With 2:01 remaining in regulation, Travis Lisabeth scooped up a loose puck in front and beat Eklund to knot the score 4-4. The goal for Lisabeth was his third of the season.

After a scoreless overtime, Mississippi picked up shootout goals from Baxter and Gauvreau to win the shootout. Matile made all four saves to pick up the win.

Gauvreau finished with four points (1g-3a), Walby had three points (2g-1a) and Baxter had three assists. Dumont failed to register a point, halting his point streak at eight games (6g-4a).

Mississippi converted on 1-of-7 on the power play, while Pensacola went 2-for-7. Sea Wolves had a season-high 54 shots, as the Ice Pilots totaled 21 shots.
