GREENSBORO, N.C. The Greensboro Generals scored four power-play goals to slip past the Mississippi Sea Wolves, 4-3, before 2,303 at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex.
Despite the loss, Mississippis Louis Dumont netted a goal and collected an assist to move past Darryl Noren for second all-time in ECHL career points, and within two points from tying Rod Taylor for first.
The Sea Wolves posted a 3-2-1 record to wrap up the season-high six-game road trip.
We let this one get away, said Sea Wolves coach Bob Woods. I thought we should have won the game. But we either have to learn to stay out of the penalty box or learn to kill off penalties. On the plus side, Dumont has great night and has really been playing great with Steffon Walby out of the lineup (on the 7-day injured reserve).
Greensboro (9-5-0) opened the score on the power play in the first-ever meeting between the teams. Matt Turek beat Greg Gardner from the side at 8:58, scoring his fifth of the season.
Dumont got Mississippi (7-5-4) on track at the 10:22 mark of the first period. Sergei Kuznetsov fed a centering pass to Dumont, who rifled a slot shot past Daniel Berthiaume, to move into second all-time on the ECHL scoring list with 686 points, tallying his eighth goal of the year.
In the second, the Generals made their power play click once more. Kurt Drummond lofted a wrist shot from the blueline, through traffic and into the back of the Sea Wolves net. Drummonds fourth of the season made it 2-1 for Greensboro.
The Sea Wolves knotted the score in the final minute of the middle stanza. Jim Baxter snapped a shot from the slot, extending his point streak to eight games, scoring his 6g-11a.
Early in the third, Baxter pounded a slapshot in for his second of the game at the 1:28 mark.
Greensboro continued its mastery with the man advantage, as Drummond and Sam Ftorek would register power-play goals and give the Generals the lead for good.
The Sea Wolves had a flurry of chances in the late going with the extra attacker, but Berthiaume was outstanding to give Greensboro the victory.
Mississippi went 2-for-10 on the power play, while Greensboro tallied on 4-of-7 chances. Generals outshot the Sea Wolves 35-33.
