Lynx Scratch Out Win Over Sea Wolves 3-1

AUGUSTA, Ga. The Augusta Lynx scored a power-play goal, shorthanded goal and an empty-net goal to top the Mississippi Sea Wolves, 3-1, in front of 2,219 at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center.

The guys battled hard, Sea Wolves coach Bob Woods said. Mike Buckley played great in net. We had opportunities to tie the game in the third, but it wasnt to be. Itll be nice to have one day off before taking on Greenville on Tuesday. Hopefully we can heal up some bumps and bruises.

Augusta (5-6-1) opened the score while shorthanded at the 17:33 mark of the first period. Scott Kelman sent Greg Jacina in on a breakaway. The Lynx rookie, Jacina, deked and beat goaltender Mike Buckley, who was making his first Sea Wolves start since October 18, 2002.

Just one second into the second period, Roger Maxwell dropped the gloves with former Sea Wolves left wing Josh Bennett. In a lopsided fight, Maxwell had the upperhand throughout.

Mississippi (6-4-4) tied the score on the power play at the 16:56 mark. Jim Baxter fired a point shot, Jason Saal made his 15th save, but Kerry Ellis-Toddington deposited his first goal of the year on the rebound. Baxter picked up one assist.

Louis Dumont, who was playing in his 600th professional regular season game, also added an assist, giving him 683 career ECHL points, two points from tying Darryl Noren for second all-time in league history and six points from equaling Rod Taylor, for first all-time in ECHL points.

In the third, Sea Wolves Patrick Rochon was assessed an elbowing penalty. On the ensuing power play, Martin Lapointe fired a shot from the right circle and bulged the twine, beating Buckley to the glove side, for the eventual game-winner at the 4:40 mark.

Sea Wolves pulled Buckley in the final minute, but Jacina slid the puck into the empty net to give Augusta its second straight win.

Mississippi converted on 1-of-4 power play opportunities, while Augusta went 1-for-6. Sea Wolves outshot the Lynx, 29-25.

Additional Notes: ECHL scoring leader, Steffon Walby, did not dress for Mississippi and neither did Brent Gauvreau.
