Mississippi Remains Unbeaten At Home In Regulation

BILOXI, Miss. � The Mississippi Sea Wolves posted a 1-0-1 record in two home games last week, extending their home unbeaten streak in regulation to six games this season, improving to 3-0-3 overall at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.

On Friday, the Sea Wolves picked up one point in a 3-2 shootout loss against Louisiana at the Wolves Den. Mississippi flew high over the visiting Fresno Falcons, 9-4, in the first-ever meeting between the teams.

 

The Sea Wolves have a record of 4-3-3. Mississippi has 11 points and sits in a tie for third place in the Central Division with the Pensacola Ice Pilots, four points behind the first place Gwinnett Gladiators. The Sea Wolves are 1-3-0 on the road.

Mississippi begins its longest road trip of the season this week, which consists of six-games over 10 days, beginning Tuesday at South Carolina. The Sea Wolves then travel to Florence on Friday, return to play at South Carolina on Saturday and complete the week at Augusta on Sunday.

Tuesday, Nov. 11 at South Carolina Stingrays � 6:05 p.m. CT � North Charleston Coliseum
It�s the first of a two-game season series. The second head-to-head game is on Saturday at South Carolina.

 

Mississippi was 1-0-0 against South Carolina in 2002-03 and is 5-6-0 all-time in the regular season.

 

In the only meeting between the teams last season, the Sea Wolves won 3-2 in overtime. Cody Bowtell scored the game-winner.

 

The last time Mississippi played at South Carolina was on February 25, 2001. The Stingrays won the game, 3-1.

The Sea Wolves are 1-3-0 all-time against South Carolina at the North Charleston Coliseum.

Former Mississippi defenseman Chris Allen is a member of the Stingrays, but was placed on the 7-day injured reserve on November 6, and will not play against the Sea Wolves this week. In 2002-03, Allen played 11 regular season games with Mississippi, picking up two goals and 10 points along with four penalty minutes. During the postseason, Allen appeared in five games for the Sea Wolves, totaling four penalty minutes.

The first of a two-game season series. The Pride visit the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on February 3.

 

Mississippi is 4-7-1 all-time in the regular season against the Pride, formerly known as Pee Dee. The Sea Wolves have never won at Florence in the regular season, posting a 0-5-1 all-time record.

 

The teams did not meet last year. The last game between the teams was on February 23, 2002 at the Florence City-County Civic Center, won by the Pride, 4-3.

 

In the postseason, the Sea Wolves defeated the Pride, in the 1999 Southern Conference Finals, four games to one. Mississippi split two games at Florence, and won all three contests at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.

 

Mississippi coach Bob Woods and Florence coach Perry Florio were ECHL teammates with the Johnstown Chiefs from 1990-94. This is the first time the two will coach against one another.

The game marks the first of two games in the season series. Augusta visits Mississippi on January 23.

 

Mississippi is 4-3-1 all-time against Augusta in the regular season. The teams did not meet last season.

 

The Lynx won the last meeting between the teams, 4-1, on February 22, 2002 at Augusta.

 

Former Mississippi forwards Nick Greenough and Josh Bennett play against the Sea Wolves for the first time.

In 35 regular season games last season, Bennett collected one goal, four points, racked up 155 penalty minutes with Mississippi. In the postseason, he appeared in two games, finishing with a �1 rating.  


Greenough played for the Sea Wolves in 2001-02. He scored six goals and totaled 15 points, while accumulating 224 penalty minutes in 42 regular season games. In the 2002 Kelly Cup Playoffs, Greenough appeared in seven games, notching one goal, one assist and 48 penalty minutes. He also suited up in one game earlier this season with Houston of the American Hockey League, registering two penalty minutes.


PLAYER OF THE WEEK � Center Brent Gauvreau notched two goals, three assists and a +4 rating over the two games last week. The 6-foot-3 and 210-pound native of Sudbury, Ontario picked up a goal, a helper and +1 rating in the shootout loss against Louisiana. The fourth year pro followed up that performance by netting another goal, two assists and a +3 rating in the victory versus Fresno. Gauvreau leads Mississippi with 11 assists and is tied for tops on the Sea Wolves with a +10 rating along with Jeff Hutchins.

 

GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK � Greg Gardner played in both games last week, posting a 1-0-1 record. The 6-foot and 190-pound native of Mississauga, Ontario made 37 saves in the 3-2 shootout loss against Louisiana on Friday. He backstopped Mississippi on Sunday, turning away 15-of-19 shots in the victory over Fresno.

The 27-year-old has an overall record of 3-2-2, 2.66 goals against average and .912 save percentage.
