Ice Pilots Fly By Sea Wolves In Overtime 4-3

BILOXI, Miss. Pensacola rookie Greg Chambers scored two power play goals including the game-winner in overtime, as the Pensacola Ice Pilots skated past the Mississippi Sea Wolves, 4-3, before 3,071 fans at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.

We quit working after the first period, said Sea Wolves coach Bob Woods. All three of the games were close in the opening weekend (three one-goal losses), but I feel that we squandered some points. Well be working on conditioning this week at practice.

Mississippi's (0-1-2) Roger Maxwell let go with a snap shot from the left circle, sailing past Brian Eklund to open the score at 6:22. It was Maxwells first goal since December 13, 2001.

Maxwell continued his scoring spree later at 13:31 with the man advantage, giving Mississippi a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes.

The Sea Wolves registered a season-high 24 shots in the opening period compared to the 11 shots by the Ice Pilots.

In the second, Pensacola (1-1-0) poured on the offense. Matt Elich and Brad Cruikshank notched even-strength goals, while Greg Chambers gave Pensacola its first lead of the game, by tallying his first pro goal on the power play, beating Sean Matile at the 18:50 mark.

In the third, Mississippi coach Bob Woods called a time-out partway through a Pensacola penalty to Doug Schueller.

Moments later at 17:47, Sea Wolves Jim Baxter rifled a shot from the point, re-directed by Jeff Hutchins to send the game to overtime.

Sea Wolves Travis Lisabeth was assessed a slashing penalty in the extra session. Chambers took full advantage, by teeing up a slap shot from the high slot to end the contest in dramatic fashion at 3:15 of overtime.

Mississippi converted on 2-of-5 power play chances, while Pensacola scored on 2-of-5 opportunities with the man advantage. Sea Wolves outshot the Ice Pilots, 44-29.

The Sea Wolves March to the Mansion promotion featured Republican Candidate, Haley Barbour, in attendance. He also addressed the fans at center ice. Democratic Candidate, Ronnie Musgrove, was unable to attend.
