BILOXI, Miss. - Mississippi Sea Wolves coach Bob Woods announced today that veteran right wing and assistant coach Steffon Walby (STEHF-ihn / WAHL-bee) has re-signed for the 2002-03 season. As per team policy, terms of the contract were not released.
Walby, 29, set team records last season for goals (42) and points (93), finishing second in ECHL goals and third in league points. He was also named to the All-ECHL First Team at right wing and won the Sea Wolves Most Valuable Player Award. The 6-foot, 200-pound native of Madison, Wisconsin was the Sea Wolves team captain last year and captured the InGlasCo ECHL Player of the Week from January 28 to February 3, 2002.
"It's a great situation working with Bob (Woods). Now that we have a year under our belt, we're looking forward to another successful season," said Walby. "There's going to be a lot of pressure to repeat last year's numbers. Certainly, the effort will be there and that's all we can ask of the players. Off the ice this summer, I've been renewing and signing up new season ticket holders. For new season tickets, my extension is 32!"
"Steffon is a key ingredient to the Sea Wolves," said Woods. "He was our Most Valuable Player last year and was in the running for East Coast Hockey League Most Valuable Player. Steffon brings a lot to our team on and off the ice. ECHL rules won't allow any player to be signed for more than one season. If they did, Walby is a player that I would have liked to lock into a multi-year deal."
Season tickets have been lowered by as much as $50 per seat and the parking fee has been eliminated. For the best seats available, call 228-275-WOLF (9653) or drop by the Sea Wolves hockey office at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
