BILOXI, Miss. - Mississippi Sea Wolves coach Bob Woods announced today defenseman Jim Baxter has re-signed for the 2002-03 season. As per team policy, terms of the contract were not released.
Baxter, 22, joined the Sea Wolves last season after being acquired from the Augusta Lynx in exchange for Jeff Bes on December 11, 2001. Last year, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound native of Brantford, Ontario totalled 11 goals, 29 assists for 40 points and 28 penalty minutes between Mississippi and Augusta. Baxter earned the Sea Wolves Defensive Player of the Year honors. He is entering his fourth year of professional hockey.
"Jim was a big part of turning around our season last year. He's a competitor that gives us more experience back on the blueline," said Woods. "I expect Baxter to take control on the power-play and if he stays healthy, he'll put up big numbers."
Mississippi opens its seventh season as a member of the ECHL on Saturday, October 12 at Baton Rouge.
The home opener for the Sea Wolves is Sunday, October 13 at 5:05 p.m. against instate rival Jackson.
