BILOXI, Miss. - The East Coast Hockey League's Mississippi Sea Wolves (1-1-0) finished their preseason on Saturday by losing 5-2 on the road against the Pensacola Ice Pilots (1-1-0).
Pensacola defenseman Josh Harrold opened the score at 1:15, by firing a shot past Mississippi goaltender Mike Buckley.
The Ice Pilots added more offense later in the frame, defenseman Jeremy Van Hoof snapped the puck over the left shoulder of Buckley at 13:28, making it 2-0 Pensacola.
In the second, the Sea Wolves got on the board courtesy of the power play. Darryl Campbell showed great persistence by lunging at a loose puck in front of Ice Pilots goaltender Maxime Gingras. It was an unassisted marker, making it 2-1 Pensacola.
Later in the second, Ice Pilots Louis Dumont busted in with David Oliver on a two-on-one break. Oliver connected to give Pensacola a 3-1 advantage after 40 minutes.
Mississippi closed the gap to one in the third period, as Travis Lisabeth pounced on a rebound at 10:25. It was Lisabeths second of the preseason.
Pensacola pulled away less than two minutes later. Roger Holeczy re-directed a centering pass from Mike Vigilante, past Greg Gardner, who took over from Buckley to start the third, making it 4-2 Pensacola.
Then at 14:26, Chris Gignac let go a wristshot in the slot, beating a screened Gardner, to round out the score at 5-2.
Buckley made 21 saves on 24 shots over 40 minutes of action. Gardner turned away 14-of-16. Pensacolas Gingras stopped 16-of-18 shots.
Mississippi was 1-for-7 on the power play. Pensacola went 1-for-13 with the man advantage.
Additional notes: In order to get a better look at Mississippi prospects, coach Bob Woods elected not to suit up Steffon Walby, Cody Bowtell, Dave Paradise, Patrick Rochon, Jim Baxter, Sean Matile and Josh Bennett...Pensacola didn't dress Greg Pankewicz...The hit of the game belonged to Sea Wolves' Jeff Hutchins. In the first period, around the Pensacola blueline, Hutchins hammered Dumont, sending the ECHLs leading scorer from last season spinning to the ice.
The Sea Wolves regular season begins on Saturday, October 12 in Baton Rouge. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. at the Riverside Centroplex.
Mississippis home opener is Sunday, October 13 at 5:05 p.m. against intrastate rival Jackson at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
