Sea Wolves Edge Ice Pilots 3-2 In Shootout

BILOXI, Miss. For a second straight night, the Mississippi Sea Wolves (5-2-0) mounted a successful comeback. Tonight the Pensacola Ice Pilots (2-1-2) were on the receiving end of Mississippis 3-2 shootout victory at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.

The first period was a goaltending battle. Sea Wolves goaltender Greg Gardner turned away all seven shots, while Ice Pilots netminder Maxime Gingras stopped 11, to keep the opening 20 minutes scoreless.

The Ice Pilots opened the score in the second. Matt Elich tallied his first of the season at 4:59 set up by Louis Dumont, making it 1-0 Pensacola.

At 14:35, Dumont connected his third of the year on the power-play to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Late in the stanza, Dave Paradise got the Sea Wolves on track. Paradises sixth of the season at 18:32, closed the score to 2-1 for Pensacola after 40 minutes.

In the third period, Jeff Hutchins re-directed the puck past Gingras for a clutch goal at the 2:32 mark, tying the score at 2-2.

Partway through the frame, Ice Pilots defenseman Marek Priechodsky was moving the puck up ice, when Sea Wolves rookie forward Josh Bennett threw a major bodycheck. Bennett caught Priechodsky with his head down and knocked him unconscious. Priechodsky was taken off on a stretcher to the hospital. Early diagnosis indicated that Priechodsky suffered a concussion and strained neck.

The teams would finish the remainder of regulation and overtime, tied at 2-2.

In the shootout, the Sea Wolves worked their magic. Jim Baxter, Dave Paradise and Cody Bowtell potted goals. Louis Dumont countered for Pensacola, but it wouldnt be enough.

Gardner made 27 saves on 29 shots to improve his record to 5-2. Gingras suffered the loss, making 29 saves on 31 Mississippi shots. His record drops to 1-1-2.

Mississippi went 0-for-5 with the man advantage. Pensacola converted on 1-of-7 power play opportunities.
