BILOXI, Miss. � It was a goaltenders duel for the second straight night at the Wolves Den, only on this night Pensacola outlasted Mississippi, 2-1.
The Sea Wolves and Ice Pilots skated to a scoreless first period. Mississippi (9-4-1) goaltender Greg Gardner turned away all 13 shots, while Pensacola�s (6-4-3) Maxime Gingras stopped nine.
Pensacola opened the score at the 9:58 mark of the second stanza. Louis Dumont spotted defenseman Rich Spiller sneaking in from the left point. Spiller snapped a shot past Gardner for his first of the season, giving the Ice Pilots a 1-0 lead.
Maxime Gingras made 10 more saves in the middle period, including two big saves, robbing Jeff Hutchins and Dave Paradise.
The Ice Pilots picked up some insurance at 12:27 of the third. Matt Elich potted a rebound past Gardner. The second goal of the year for Elich, made it 2-0 Pensacola.
The Sea Wolves solved Gingras on the 29th shot of the game. Cody Bowtell fed Mike Scott on the power play, rounding out the scoring. Defenseman Jim Baxter picked up an assist on the goal, extending his point streak to a Sea Wolves season-high eight games.
Mississippi finished 1-for-3 on the power play. Pensacola was 0-for-2 on the man advantage.
Additional Notes: The Second Annual Nextel / Sea Wolves Howl Against Hunger was a big success as 2,200 pounds of canned goods and non-perishables were collected for the Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen in Biloxi. The first 3,000 fans received a Nextel / Sea Wolves �Howl Towel�. Following the game, the Sea Wolves held a jersey auction benefiting the Gulf Coast Youth Hockey Association.
The Sea Wolves travel to Jackson tomorrow for at 2:05 p.m. opening faceoff. The Sea Wolves lead the battle for the Nextel Cup, four points to none.
The next home game for Mississippi is Tuesday night against the Louisiana IceGators at 7:05 p.m. at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. All casino employees buying one ticket, receive one free ticket.
