Sea Wolves Top Cottonmouths 5-1

BILOXI, Miss. The Mississippi Sea Wolves received goals from five different scorers, as they downed the Columbus Cottonmouths, 5-1.

Mississippi (14-8-2) opened the score at 16:13 of the first period. The puck took a wicked bounce off the endboards in the Columbus zone, Sea Wolves Travis Lisabeth gathered it in front and beat goaltender Mike Morrison high, making it 1-0.

In the second, Sea Wolves rookie Jeff Hutchins tallied his 5th of the season at 11:25, giving Mississippi a 2-0 lead. In the third, another Mississippi rookie Mike Renzi cashed in. It was Renzis first in a Sea Wolves uniform, third of the season, since being acquired from Dayton on November 22.

Things turned physical at 7:54 of the final period, as Hutchins checked Jerome Bechard at the Sea Wolves blueline by the boards, knocking the Columbus captain to the ice. Mike Lee came in to Bechards rescue, pummeling Hutchins. Lee received two minutes for instigating, five for fighting and a game misconduct. Hutchins was assessed five minutes for boarding. Bechard would be fine.

Columbus (11-11-2) got its offense in gear at 10:18. Darren McAusland point shot in the slot went through the legs of goaltender Sean Matile, cutting it to 3-1 for Mississippi.

The Sea Wolves regained their three-goal advantage on the power play. Dwayne Blais took a centering pass from Renzi and deposited his fourth of the campaign. The goal by Blais was scored in his 100th pro hockey game.

Mike Scott rounded out the scoring by potting a shorthand goal on the breakaway at 17:12.

Matile made 29 saves on 30 shots, improving his record to 3-2-0. Morrison suffered the loss turning away 27-of-32. His record drops to 5-8-2.
