Sea Wolves Make 38-Special By Downing Kingfish 4-1

BATON ROUGE, La. The Mississippi Sea Wolves are howling on top of the East Coast Hockey League, moving into first place in the 27-team ECHL with 38 points, by knocking off the Baton Rouge Kingfish 4-1.

Mississippi also extended its winning streak to a season-high four games.

Its the first time the Sea Wolves organization and coach Bob Woods have led the ECHL in points at this stage in the season.

Mississippi (18-9-2) opened the score at 1:09 of the first period. Defenseman Jim Baxter took a Cody Bowtell pass and roofed a shot past goaltender Brian Leitza. Baxters goal was his eighth of the year and 32nd point.

The Sea Wolves continued to come at the Kingfish, as a centering pass by Dwayne Blais was re-directed by Jeff Hutchins, making it 2-0 for Mississippi. The goal for Hutchins was his sixth of the campaign.

Mississippi continued to pour it on in the opening stanza. Dave Paradise unleashed a rocket of a slap shot from the right circle, blowing it past Leitza. Paradises 17th of the year made it 3-0 for the Sea Wolves after 20 minutes.

Baton Rouge (8-16-4) got on track at 19:14 of the second. Marquis Mathieu let go with a shot from the slot, goaltender Sean Matile slowed it down, but it trickled over the goal line. Mathieus third of the season, made it 3-1 for Mississippi through 40 minutes.

In the third, Mississippi connected on the power-play. Paradise notched his second of the night blasting in a shot from the slot. The 18th of the year for Paradise, rounded out the scoring.

The Sea Wolves also lead the Coca-Cola Cup season series, 10 points to 2.

Matile backstopped Mississippi to the win by making 29 saves on 30 shots. Matile improves his record to 5-2-0. Leitza stopped 19-of-23, falling to 2-3-1 on the season.

Mississippi converted on 1-of-6 power play opportunities. Baton Rouge failed to tally on five chances with the man advantage.
