BILOXI, Miss. � Pensacola's Gregor Baumgartner ended the Mississippi Sea Wolves three-game winning streak in dramatic fashion by scoring an overtime goal giving the Ice Pilots a 5-4 win at the Pensacola Civic Center.
Mississippi (23-11-4) opened the score at 9:02 of the first period. Rookie Mike Scott batted in a rebound in front, off a Steffon Walby shot, beating Maxime Gingras. Scott scored his 10th of the year.
The Sea Wolves built a 2-0 lead at the 12:11 mark. Darryl Campbell unleashed a rocket shot from the high slot over the right shoulder of Gingras, making it 2-0 for Mississippi. The goal for Campbell, was his fourth of the campaign.
Pensacola (18-12-4) bounced back at 14:23 of the opening period. Sea Wolves goaltender Greg Gardner tried to play the puck behind the net, but Greg Pankewicz beat him to it. Pankewicz centered and Gregor Baumgartner tallied his 13 of the season, closing the Mississippi lead to 2-1.
The Ice Pilots tied the game on a controversial goal at 16:09 of the first stanza. Martin Bartek snapped a shot from the right circle. The goal light was turned on, then off. After a conference with the officials and goal judge, it was deemed a goal. Bartek�s fifth tally in his eighth game with Pensacola, knotted the score 2-2.
In the middle frame, Mississippi took the lead by converting on the power play at 1:19. Walby re-directed a Dave Paradise pass. Walby�s 19th of the season, gave the Sea Wolves a 3-2 advantage.
Pensacola would rally once more. Chad Theuer let go with a wrister in the slot at the 8:01 mark, drifting it past the glove of Gardner, tying the score 3-3. Theuer with his eighth marker of the campaign.
The Ice Pilots would get a second controversial call go their way. Pankewicz fired a shot from the right circle and the goal light did not go on. But after a meeting with the officials, the goal was awarded at the 12:12 mark. The goal for Pankewicz was his 20th of the season, giving Pensacola its first lead of the game, 4-3 through 40 minutes.
The hit of the game came in the second period. Sea Wolves� Chris Cava applied the hit of the game sending Ice Pilots' Louis Dumont flying in the near corner in the Mississippi zone.
In the third, Sea Wolves� Cody Bowtell tied it 4-4, on the power play at 15:15. It was Bowtell�s 15th of the year.
In overtime, Ice Pilots� Baumgartner blasted a shot from just inside the blueline, ending the game in dramatic fashion at the 1:31 mark.
Gardner surrendered five goals on 31 shots, dropping to 18-8-4. Gingras turned away 25-of-29, raising his record to 14-9-4.
Mississippi went 2-for-4 with the man advantage. Pensacola failed to convert on four power play opportunities.
The Sea Wolves hit the road for a three-game trip beginning tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. at Arkansas.
