Kelly Cup Champions Feature Former Sea Wolves |
DULUTH, Ga. - The Alaska Aces, who consist of three former Mississippi Sea Wolves including goaltender Matt Underhill, forward Mike Scott and defenseman Ryan Gaucher, defeated the Gwinnett Gladiators 4-3 in Game 5 to capture the 2006 Kelly Cup championship by winning the best-of-seven series, 4 games to 1.
Underhill stopped 40 shots in the cup-clinching victory. The 26-year-old Underhill appeared in 24 games with the Sea Wolves in 2004-05 posting three shutouts, a 13-8-3 record with a 2.65 goals-against average and .923 save percentage.
Scott, who scored a shorthanded goal in the first period and the game-winner on a power play midway through the second, completing a comeback from a 3-1 deficit, was named Playoff MVP with 11 goals and 10 assists in 22 postseason games. Scott, 29, was in his first professional season in 2002-03 when he went on to register Sea Wolves team records for a rookie by netting 26 goals, collecting 41 assists and 67 points in 64 games. During the 2003 postseason in 12 games, the 6-foot-1 and 195-pound Scott scored six goals and picked up six assists for 12 points.
Gaucher, 28, played in 50 games as a rookie with Mississippi during 1999-00, where he tallied five goals and 32 points. The 5-foot-11 and 210-pound Gaucher was the Sea Wolves only representative at the 2000 ECHL All-Star Game in Greenville, South Carolina and scored a goal in the contest.
Gwinnett's roster featured Josh Bennett. The 25-year-old appeared in 35 games for Mississippi in 2002-03, where he scored one goal, recorded three assists and piled up 155 penalty minutes.
The Alaska Aces became only the second team ever to finish first in the regular season and win the Kelly Cup in the same year joining the 1997 South Carolina Stingrays.
The win over the Gladiators marked the third consecutive time in the postseason that Alaska defeated a team that finished with at least 100 points during the regular season.
