BILOXI, MS – Lance Monych’s pair of goals, including one with just 42 seconds remaining in regulation, weren’t enough as Columbia held on for it’s first-ever win in regulation against the Mississippi Sea Wolves by a score of 3-2.
Mac Faulkner got Columbia on the board at 8:57 of the first period when he broke down the ice shorthanded, went to the backhand, and beat Sea Wolves goaltender Ryan Munce for his ninth goal of the season. The Sea Wolves tied the game at the 13:32 mark when Lance Monych took a pass from Marek Kvapil and buried the puck behind Columbia’s Todd Ford on a wraparound. The Inferno regained the lead when Owen Fussey pucked up the rebound of Brad Ralph’s shot at 16:35.
Columbia would increase their lead to 3-1 Jeremy Hall tapped in Jeff Miles’ centering pass at 15:29 of the second period.
The Sea Wolves threatened to tie the game after pulling Munce in favor of an extra attacker with 90 seconds remaining in the third period. Lance Monych found the puck in a massive goalmouth frenzy and tapped it past Ford to draw the Sea Wolves within 42 seconds remaining. Mississippi continued to threaten, but failed to score to tie the game before time expired.
The Mississippi power play was 0-for-7, and Ryan Munce made 26 saves, earning the loss.
